What is Dragon Boating?

Dragon head forward, dragon tail backward. The only thing this could possibly mean for a layman is that there is a dragon idling on the water. Luckily, that is not the case! Since at long last dragon boats are becoming well-known in Hungary. But what this means exactly, we can find out on the pages below.

It is certain that more and more people hear and know about this extraordinary and enormously spectacular sport. The followers of dragon boating use 12.5-meter long, canoe-like boats, which may not be longer than 13.5 meters including the dragon head and the dragon tail. A maximum of 18 to 20 people paddle in one boat, and, additionally, there is a drummer, a helmsman, as well as four reservists. The paddlers are sitting on both sides of the boat, facing forwards. The drummer is sitting in the front part of the boat, turning towards the paddlers, facing backwards, whereas the helmsman is standing in the back part of the boat.

As it can be seen from what has been mentioned so far, dragon boating is a team building kind of sport where more than 20 people are working towards the same goal simultaneously. One crew consists of a number of people equal to 2 football teams. Dragon boating has been united in Hungary by the Hungarian Dragon Boat Federation for over ten years now.

Anyone can participate in dragon boating without any qualification, women, men, children, elderly and young people. No previous experience in water sports is required. In this wonderful free-time sport, everybody can find some kind of beauty. At the same time, you can enjoy the proximity of nature, the active relaxation, the team environment and the excitement of fighting for a goal.
